Actions for higher education cooperation [fr]

The Office for Science and Technology is in charge, with the cultural service, of collaborations between French and Canadian higher education institutions.

The Office for Science and Technology (OST) promotes partnerships based on the two core missions of higher education institutions: academic training and research. The spread of the knowledge-based economy and the respective interests of our societies place the Master’s and PhD levels at the top of priorities. The Office for Science and Technology promotes partnerships to serve the best students, both in France and in Canada. At a time when universities are defining strategies and targeting specific partners in the context of their international agendas, the Scientific Service is at their disposal to facilitate structured collaborations in academic training and research and to make sure the best suited cooperation instruments are used. Such collaboration will pave the way for genuine, lasting international partnerships.

Below an interview of Mona Nemer, Vice-President Research at the University of Ottawa, and Jacques Samarut, President of the "Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon" after signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions:

OST policy regarding higher education cooperation

University cooperation between France and Canada aims at:

  • Developing structured and durable partnerships, particularly joint Master’s and PhD programs. The “win-win” aspects of joint degrees make French universities more attractive and encourage Canadian universities to a embrace broader international openness.
  • Strengthening the link between training and research by focusing cooperation on Master’s and PhD levels.
  • Making the French higher education and research system more readable for Canadian partners, by focusing on recent trends (gathering or merging of research and higher education institutions, creation of competitiveness clusters or research networks).

University and Scientific Project Support

Project support can take on various forms, whether it is financing missions (in Canada) or invitations (in France) of certified researchers, financing joint research projects through FFCR, creating a researchers’ network by means of workshops or cooperation agreements, or supporting students with scholarships
