Prime Minister Manuel Valls conducted an official visit to Canada, including events in Québec, from Wednesday, October 12th, to Friday, October 14th.
This visit to Canada was an opportunity for the Prime Minister to travel to Ottawa, to meet with the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, and the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau. Prime Minister Valls discussed avenues for the overall development of Franco-Canadian relations; economic affairs within La Francophonie; and the role that Canada and France can work together to play regarding such global issues as the fight against climate change and the crises that threaten peace and security throughout the world.
The Prime Minister then continued on to Québec, starting in Montréal, where, at the invitation of Premier of Québec Philippe Couillard and in the company of Prime Minister Trudeau, he took part in discussions regarding the opportunities that the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement has to offer companies in France, Canada, and Québec. He also met with members of the sizable French community in Canada, particularly in Montréal, in addition to representatives of the companies at the heart of Franco-Québécois economic relations.
In Québec City, Prime Minister Valls took part in the 19th Alternating Meeting between the Prime Minister of France and the Premier of Québec, during the course of which he met with his counterpart in Québec to discuss the state of affairs regarding the unique and privileged relationship between France and Québec. They also established priorities regarding cooperation between France and Québec. This Meeting, the latest in an ongoing series between France and Québec that began in 1977, focused on innovation, research, professional mobility, cultural affairs, economic affairs, and issues affecting young people. This Meeting marked the occasion of the official creation of a Franco-Québécois maritime institute (IMFQ). Prime Minister Valls also attended the official inauguration of the new site of the Consulate General of France in Québec.
His visit continued to Saint-Pierre and Miquelon on Friday, October 14th, and Saturday, October 16th, 2016.
