Presentation
France and Canada have developed strong and harmonious relations. Canada is one of France’s major partners, namely in the following four areas: culture, given the two countries’ shared history and emotional ties; politics, since France and Canada often take the same positions—in the United Nations, the Francophonie Organization and the G8; economics, France being the third or fourth largest investor in Canada; and tourism, with close to a million Canadian tourists visiting France each year.
The year 2007 paid tribute to the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The year 2008 marked the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City and saw the EU-Canada Summit take place. These events served as important reminders of the time-honoured and close relations between Canada and France.
